About Sarcoidosis

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that can affect multiple organs in the body, most commonly the lungs and lymph nodes. It causes the growth of tiny collections of inflammatory cells, called granulomas, in the affected tissues.

Common Symptoms

  • fatigue
  • fever
  • swollen lymph nodes
  • weight loss
  • shortness of breath
  • persistent cough
  • skin rashes or lesions
  • joint pain
  • blurred vision
  • red eyes

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, imaging tests like chest X-rays or CT scans, and often a biopsy of affected tissue to confirm the presence of granulomas. Blood tests may also be conducted to check for signs of inflammation or organ involvement.

Causes

The exact cause of sarcoidosis is not yet fully understood, but it is believed to result from an abnormal immune response to an environmental trigger in genetically predisposed individuals. Factors such as infections, chemicals, and dust may play a role in initiating the disease.

Treatment Overview

Treatment approaches often aim to manage symptoms and prevent organ damage. This may include corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, or other immune-suppressing medications for more severe cases. Some individuals may also explore complementary therapies, such as dietary adjustments or stress management techniques, to support their well-being alongside conventional care. The choice of treatment is usually individualized based on the organs affected and the severity of the disease.

Prognosis & Outlook

The prognosis for sarcoidosis can vary widely among individuals. In some cases, the condition may resolve on its own within a few years, while for others, it can become chronic and require ongoing management. Regular monitoring is often recommended to assess disease activity and organ involvement.

Types & Variants

  • Pulmonary Sarcoidosis

The most common form, affecting the lungs and the lymph nodes in the chest. It can cause coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

  • Cutaneous Sarcoidosis

Affects the skin, causing rashes, sores, or reddish-purple bumps known as erythema nodosum.

  • Ocular Sarcoidosis

Involves the eyes, leading to inflammation (uveitis), dryness, blurred vision, and potential glaucoma.

  • Cardiac Sarcoidosis

A serious form where granulomas form in the heart muscle, potentially causing arrhythmias or heart failure.
