About Pulmonary Hypertension
Pulmonary hypertension is a type of high blood pressure that affects the arteries in the lungs and the right side of the heart. In this condition, the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the lungs become narrowed, blocked, or destroyed, making it harder for blood to flow through.
Common Symptoms
- Shortness of breath, especially during exercise
- Fatigue
- Dizziness or fainting spells
- Chest pressure or pain
- Swelling in the ankles, legs, and abdomen
- Bluish lips or skin (cyanosis)
- Racing pulse or heart palpitations
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical exam, reviewing medical history, and various tests to assess heart and lung function. These may include an echocardiogram, right heart catheterization, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, CT scan, and lung function tests.
Causes
Pulmonary hypertension can be caused by underlying heart or lung conditions, connective tissue diseases, liver disease, or certain medications. In some cases, there is no identifiable cause, which is referred to as idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Types & Variants
Group 1: Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)
Caused by narrowing of the small arteries in the lungs. It can be idiopathic (no known cause), inherited, or associated with drugs, toxins, or conditions like HIV and connective tissue disease.
Group 2: PH due to Left-Sided Heart Disease
The most common type of pulmonary hypertension, caused by conditions affecting the left side of the heart, such as mitral valve disease or long-term high blood pressure.
Group 3: PH due to Lung Diseases
Associated with chronic lung conditions like COPD, interstitial lung disease, or sleep apnea, which cause low oxygen levels.
Group 4: PH due to Chronic Blood Clots (CTEPH)
Caused by chronic blood clots in the lungs that obstruct the pulmonary arteries.
Group 5: PH with Unclear Mechanisms
Linked to other conditions, such as blood disorders, metabolic disorders like thyroid disease, or kidney disease, through mechanisms that are not fully understood.
