About Gastroparesis
Gastroparesis is a condition where the stomach muscles do not contract normally, slowing or stopping the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. This delayed stomach emptying can interfere with digestion and nutrient absorption.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a review of symptoms and medical history. A gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES) is a common test used to measure how quickly food leaves the stomach, often considered the gold standard for diagnosis. Other tests, such as endoscopy or barium X-rays, may be performed to rule out other conditions.
Causes
In many cases, the cause of gastroparesis is unknown, which is referred to as idiopathic gastroparesis. Diabetes is a common known cause, where nerve damage due to high blood sugar can affect the vagus nerve that controls stomach muscles. Other potential causes may include certain surgeries, viral infections, or some medications.

Managing gastroparesis often involves dietary adjustments, such as eating smaller, more frequent meals or consuming foods low in fat and fiber. Medications may be prescribed to help control nausea and vomiting or to stimulate stomach muscle contractions. Types & Variants
Diabetic Gastroparesis
Develops as a complication of long-term high blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, which damages the vagus nerve.
Post-surgical Gastroparesis
Can occur as a complication of certain surgeries on the stomach or esophagus, where the vagus nerve may be unintentionally injured.
Idiopathic Gastroparesis
Refers to cases where no specific cause can be found, which accounts for a significant number of diagnoses.
