About Emphysema
Emphysema is a chronic lung disease that is part of a group of lung conditions called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It involves damage to the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, which can lead to shortness of breath and reduced oxygen intake.

- Fatigue
- Bluish tint to lips or fingernail beds (cyanosis) in severe cases

Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, a review of medical history, and pulmonary function tests (spirometry) to measure lung capacity and airflow. Imaging tests, such as X-rays or CT scans, may also be used to visualize lung damage and rule out other conditions.
Causes
The primary cause of emphysema is long-term exposure to airborne irritants, with cigarette smoking being the most significant risk factor. Other causes may include exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, dust, and, in rare cases, an inherited deficiency of a protein called alpha-1-antitrypsin.
Treatment Overview
Management of emphysema often involves approaches aimed at slowing disease progression and alleviating symptoms. These may include bronchodilators to relax airways, steroids to reduce inflammation, and oxygen therapy to improve oxygen levels. Pulmonary rehabilitation programs, lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation, and in some severe cases, surgical options like lung volume reduction surgery or lung transplantation, may be considered.

The prognosis for emphysema can vary significantly depending on the stage of the disease at diagnosis, the patient's overall health, and adherence to management strategies. While emphysema is a progressive and incurable condition, effective management can often help slow its progression and improve quality of life. Regular medical follow-up is generally recommended.
Types & Variants
Centrilobular Emphysema
The most common type, strongly associated with smoking. It primarily affects the upper lobes of the lungs.
Panlobular Emphysema
Affects the entire acinus (a cluster of alveoli) and is often linked to alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. It typically involves the lower lobes of the lungs.
Paraseptal Emphysema
Affects the outer edges of the lung tissue, near the pleura (the lining of the lungs). It can lead to the formation of large air pockets called bullae.
