About Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs, but can also impact other organs such as the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. It causes the body to produce thick, sticky mucus that can clog airways and obstruct ducts.

Diagnosis

Cystic fibrosis is typically diagnosed through newborn screening tests, which can identify elevated levels of a chemical called immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT). If screening results are positive, a sweat test is usually performed to measure the amount of salt in sweat, as CF causes higher-than-normal salt levels. Genetic testing can confirm the diagnosis by identifying mutations in the CFTR gene.

Causes

Cystic fibrosis is caused by a mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene. This gene is responsible for creating a protein that regulates the movement of salt and water in and out of cells. When the gene is faulty, the CFTR protein malfunctions, leading to the production of thick, sticky mucus in various organs.

Treatment Overview

Management strategies for cystic fibrosis often involve a combination of approaches aimed at clearing mucus from the lungs, preventing and controlling infections, and improving nutrition. Conventional treatments may include airway clearance techniques, medications like bronchodilators and mucus thinners, and antibiotics. While it remains a chronic, progressive condition, many individuals with CF are now living into adulthood. The outlook can vary widely depending on the specific gene mutations, the severity of the condition, and adherence to treatment plans.
