Chronic Sinusitis
About Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis, also known as chronic rhinosinusitis, is a condition where the cavities around nasal passages (sinuses) become inflamed and swollen for at least 12 weeks, despite treatment attempts. This inflammation can interfere with drainage and cause a buildup of mucus.
Common Symptoms
- Facial pain or pressure
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Pus or discolored discharge from the nose
- Reduced sense of smell or taste
- Ear pain
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Fatigue
- Bad breath
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, including an endoscopic view of the nasal passages. Imaging tests like CT scans may be used to visualize the sinuses and identify blockages or inflammation. Sometimes, a nasal culture is performed to identify bacteria or fungi.
Causes
The exact cause is not always clear, but chronic sinusitis may be linked to nasal polyps, a deviated nasal septum, or other structural abnormalities. Allergies, certain immune system deficiencies, and fungal infections are also considered potential contributing factors. Exposure to irritants like smoke can also exacerbate the condition.
Treatment Overview
Conventional approaches may include nasal corticosteroids, saline rinses, and antibiotics for bacterial infections. In some cases, oral corticosteroids or antihistamines might be prescribed. For persistent symptoms or structural issues, surgical interventions like endoscopic sinus surgery are sometimes considered. Some individuals explore complementary approaches, such as herbal remedies or acupuncture, although scientific evidence for their effectiveness varies.
Prognosis & Outlook
The prognosis for chronic sinusitis can vary widely among individuals. While many people experience symptom improvement with appropriate management, the condition may require ongoing treatment to control symptoms and prevent recurrence. Some individuals may find long-term relief, while others might experience chronic or intermittent symptoms over time.
Types & Variants
Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP)
A type of chronic sinusitis characterized by the presence of soft, noncancerous growths on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses.
Chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP)
The more common form of the condition, where persistent inflammation occurs without the development of nasal polyps.
