About Chronic Fatigue
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), is a complex, long-term illness characterized by extreme fatigue that is not improved by rest and may worsen with physical or mental activity. This fatigue significantly impacts daily activities and is accompanied by other symptoms.
Common Symptoms
- profound fatigue
- post-exertional malaise (PEM)
- unrefreshing sleep
- cognitive difficulties (brain fog)
- orthostatic intolerance (dizziness upon standing)
- muscle or joint pain
- headaches
- tender lymph nodes
- sore throat
- new sensitivities to food, odors, or chemicals
Diagnosis
Diagnosis of ME/CFS is typically based on a clinical evaluation of symptoms after ruling out other medical conditions. There is no specific diagnostic test; instead, doctors rely on established diagnostic criteria that require the presence of core symptoms for a particular duration.
Causes
The exact cause of ME/CFS is not yet fully understood, but it is thought to involve a combination of factors. These may include viral infections, immune system dysfunction, genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalances, and psychological stress, potentially triggering or perpetuating the condition.
Treatment Overview
Currently, there is no cure for ME/CFS, but symptom management is a primary focus. Approaches may include pacing strategies to manage energy levels, sleep hygiene, pain management, and tailored exercise programs under medical supervision. Some individuals explore dietary changes, supplements, or mind-body therapies; however, these should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
Prognosis & Outlook
The prognosis for individuals with ME/CFS can vary widely. While some people may experience periods of improvement, the condition is often chronic and can significantly impact quality of life. A small number of individuals may experience a full recovery, but many learn to manage their symptoms over time.
