About Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the cells of the bladder, a hollow, muscular organ in your lower pelvis that stores urine. It commonly starts in the cells that line the inside of the bladder.
Common Symptoms
- Blood in the urine (hematuria)
- Frequent urination
- Pain during urination (dysuria)
- Urgency to urinate
- Back pain
- Pelvic pain
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
Diagnosis
Diagnosis commonly involves analyzing urine samples for cancer cells (urinalysis and cytology) and visually examining the bladder with a cystoscope, a thin scope inserted through the urethra. Biopsies of suspicious areas found during cystoscopy are crucial for confirming the presence and type of cancer.
Causes
The exact cause of bladder cancer is not fully understood, but it is strongly linked to certain risk factors. Smoking is a primary risk factor, and exposure to certain industrial chemicals may also increase risk. Chronic bladder inflammation or infections are also considered potential contributing factors.
Treatment Overview
Treatment approaches for bladder cancer may include surgery to remove the tumor or bladder, chemotherapy delivered into the bladder (intravesical) or throughout the body (systemic), radiation therapy, and immunotherapy. For some individuals, targeted therapy drugs may also be considered. Complementary therapies, such as acupuncture or herbal remedies, are sometimes discussed as supportive alongside conventional treatments, though their effectiveness for bladder cancer itself is not established.

Types & Variants
Urothelial Carcinoma (Transitional Cell Carcinoma)
The most common type of bladder cancer. It begins in the urothelial cells that line the inside of the bladder.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
A less common type associated with chronic irritation of the bladder, such as from a long-term infection or catheter use.
Adenocarcinoma
A very rare type that begins in the cells that make up mucus-secreting glands in the bladder.
